5 Tips for Renting A Motor or An E-Bike In Asia
Your ID
Don’t give them your original passport no matter what they say. They will try to tell you it’s the “law.” Give them a copy of it. If they charge you a crazy amount because you would rather give them a photo copy of your passport instead of your original move on to the next bike shop.
Prices
Ask locals and other travelers what’s the average price for a bike before going to the shop. Many shops will try to increase the price when they see you’re a foreigner and think you don’t know anything. Come prepared to bring that price down to a fair one!
Safer Renting Options
If you are staying at a hotel or hostel that offers bike services, get a bike through the place you are staying vs going to a bike shop alone. A hotel/hostel have policies that protect you from fraud etc and as a foreigner visiting the country they already have a photo copy of your passport. Best part, because you are a guest, there is usually a discount!
Protection
Try to travel with travel insurance. If you break the bike, the costs can be extremely expensive. Usually the hotel you stay at will have insurance packages you can buy as well. I recommend it unless you’re a really confident driver. Even then, however, most roads in Asia are still very dangerous and the driving laws are different so be aware/safe!
How To Pay
Bring cash. Most places in Asia only accept cash, especially at these small shops. If you only have a credit card or debit card, find a local ATM to withdraw cash. Hopefully, you’ve checked with your bank about fees before your trip.
